Summary
Traces the history of the Shoshone Cavern National Monument near Cody, Wyoming, from its creation in 1909 through its delistment as a monument because the National Park Service didn't view it as a first-class cave and couldn't afford its upkeep. After being given to the City of Cody in 1954, private interests leased it, but the expense of road access and maintenance forced them to abandon commercial uses, so the Bureau of Land Management took back administration of the cave. It has had various names through its history since Ned Frost discovered it in January, 1909, while hunting. The names include Frost Cave, Crystal Cave, Shoshone Cavern, Spirit Mountain Caverns, and Spirit Mountain Cave. The author points out that local control doesn't always mean better management. The cave remains in BLM custody which limits its use.
