Summary
Citizens are increasingly forming networks based on shared ideas and norms to influence environmental policy-making. While scientific information represents a key source of legitimacy within this realm, little research exsists on the relationship between science and advocacy. Additionally, more research is needed on the role contectual factors play in mobilizing collective action. / This research ecamines the roles of scientific knowledge and expertise in the evolution of an international environmental network - the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative (Y2Y). It also explores the implications of globalization, regional transitions and telecommunications for environmental networking. / My research findings are based on analysis of data gathered as a participant observer at network meetings, on interviews conducted with participants and on analysis of archival data and electronic communications comparable dynamics and face similar obstacles to cooperation. Therefore, this research established a theoretical groundwork for comparative analysis upon which additional case studies may build.
